What sets Train Like a Ranger apart from its competitors is purpose and detail behind each training regimen. This is not your average training program. This program is a PDF file written by Daniel Burnett, former 75th Ranger Regiment Team Leader, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA CSCS), Certified Sports Nutrition Specialist, and athlete. This program considers a wide margin of running goals from those with no experience, to advanced runners. It has 6 phases: Introduction to Cardio; Improving Distance & the 1-Mile Run; Improving Distance & Conquering the 1-Mile Run; Conquering the 2 & 3-Mile Run, Introduction to the 5-Mile Run; Advanced Running, Improving the 5-Mile and VO2 Max; and the Train Like a Ranger Phase! Mastering the 5-Mile and Conquering VO2 Max. Though there is no set length on each phase, there are training objectives to master before progressing to the next phase of training. Each phase can be expected to take 2-6 weeks, making the program approximately 12- 36 weeks of training depending on the individual's level of fitness.
